Welcome to penny harvest 2011-12!

May: Build Legacy
Final grant and service project decisions were due April 3rd. If you have yet to submit your school's grant decisions, click here to download the Year-long Report.

Now is the time for students to leave behind a legacy that will last for years to come.  The Build Legacy phase can be implemented in 3 easy step:

  1. Legacy Service Project: Consider legacy service projects that will not only impact the community but that will continue as a tradition the following year.

  2. Celebrate at the Check Award Ceremony: Within the month of May, student leaders should begin planning and hosting their Check Award Ceremonies to bring the school community together, present grants to their recipients and honor everyone that has contributed. Download this sample Senior Leader Script to help graduating leaders prepare.

  3. Share the Trade Secrets: To wrap-up the year, guide graduating student leaders to prepare their Trade Secrets binder to pass on to incoming students who will take on the leadership role next year. Visit the Build Legacy section under Curriculum for more ideas.

Upcoming Opportunities

  • Schools of Excellence 2011-2012. Receive city-wide recognition for implementing the program and creatively overcoming barriers. Start by collecting photographs, student artwork and reflections to seamlessly include in your application. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 23rd. Click here for the new and improved application.

  • September 11th Memorial and Museum - This year, we honor the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 through a partnership with the NYC Department of Education and the September 11th Memorial and Museum. Schools from across the city have contributed funds to assist in the final construction of the Memorial and Museum. Stay tuned to find out the total dollars and volunteer hours students have allocated. Has your school given a grant to the 9/11 Memorial Fund? If so, expect an email with next steps by May 7th!
